Overview

The purpose of the application is to allow beginners to do initial searches and record details of pre-1700 houses in Merioneth by using a simple interface which works from their own home computers. The focus is on early dates (pre-1750s) so means of searching, parish records, census records, etc. are not included. However, Welsh Tithe Maps and Apportionments (1850s) and Maps Side by Side - where OS six inch maps (1888-1913) can be compared to satellite mapping - are included as they help to see if houses still exist.

You need to use a systematic process to record results (or lack of them) - see 'Recording Information' below for a simple such process.

To open an internet page, document or further information, click once on the blue link. The link will open in a new tab. To open other pages, etc., return to the 'Home' tab and click on another blue link.

With the exception of online searches all the searchable documents (PDFs) included in the application open and are searched using the 'Search' or 'Find' facility in the PDF page of your internet browser (Firefox, Safari, etc.) It is possible that the documents will open in Acrobat Reader (it depends on how your computer is set up). Information on how to search PDFs is available in the appropriate "more information" links.

Tips on how to make online searches are also available in the other appropriate "more information" links.

Recording Information

It is as important to record the absence of information as well as what you find.

Keep a front sheet showing what you searched and whether there was a result or not.

Results can be copied and pasted into a Word document where text is allowed to be copied (Coflein, Listed Buildings etc.). Otherwise the simplest way is to take a 'screenshot' of what your monitor is showing. To do this press 'Print Screen' on your keyboard. How to print out or save the copied screen depends on your operating system and how your computer is set up. Click here for more help.
